January 24, 2010 - David and Goliath/God and Addiction

Watching the news this morning there was a segment on Tiger Woods being in rehab.  There is speculation that he may be away in a rehab for sex addicts.  Whether he is away or not, whether he is a sex addict or not, whether there is such a phenomenon as sex addiction can be discussed by TMZ and the other television programs.  That addiction does exist in the lives of individuals and for those who love them is something we can talk about and pray about.

People who are addicted: drugs, alcohol, food, gambling, sex, and other substances and behaviors, have been described as “having a hole in their souls”.  There then seems to be an attempt to fill this proverbial “hole” but the attempt fails.  According to 12-step programs, it’s not until one can acknowledge their powerlessness over the addiction (step 1) that one can then begin to heal/recover.

“David continued: “The Lord, who delivered me from the claws of the lion and the bear, will also keep me safe from the clutches of this Philistine (Goliath).”  Saul answered David, “Go! the Lord will be with you.””   (1 Sam 17:33)

We gather this Monday evening at
7:30 in the Little Church to pray for those living with addiction, with these massive Goliaths in their lives.  We gather as Church to acknowledge that there are those who are suffering in themselves with addiction.  We gather as Church to be with those in recovery.  We gather as Church to support those who live with people in and out of recovery.  We gather as Church to acknowledge that in one way or another, all of us have a hole in our soul; all of us have Goliaths that only the Lord can vanquish.

Let’s gather as Church on Monday to support one another.
