November 21, 2010 - Respect

Respect: it comes in all forms.

Respect for the unborn: Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI has issued an unprecedented request for prayers worldwide against abortion on Saturday, November 27th. I invite you to gather on December 3 as we have a 24-hour period of Eucharistic Adoration in our rectory chapel.

Respect: I seldom am horrified but I was a week ago when I saw the cover of “Inside Jersey”, one of the newspapers’ magazines. The question came to mind: Is it necessary? I am reacting to the tattoo on a man’s arm that says: “Merry Freakin’ Christmas”. I AM offended by such a blatant lack of respect for us and for our faith. Christmas is one of our holiest days of the year, second to Easter. It is where God chose, through the ‘yes’ of a young Jewish woman, to enter our world as a human; to become one of us. I am offended by the lack of respect to our faith, to us as Christians. Have we become such an easy mark that there is a sense that “there won’t be any response.”

Respect: I reflect on whether the world’s lack of concern for the vulnerable has ever so quietly and subtly trickled down to where respect, whether it be self-respect or respect of others, is being lost.

Let’s gather on December 3rd to pray for life and respect. If you can’t make it to the rectory chapel, then offer your own prayer that ALL of us can regain and grow in our love and respect for all of life, for each other.

Father Andy Prachar
